Pandas and Take-a-Break

The church is physically located centrally within the village community – in the High Street – and it also aims to be central to the community life of the village. Two main, weekly, activities support this ambition.

On Thursdays, the church halls and the worship space are taken over by toddlers and their parents, grandparents or carers in the “Pandas Club”, which meets from 10.00 until 11.45 am. This has been an important part of village life for almost 20 years and is run by Helen Payton, a former headmistress, and Penny Champion, who is a mid-wife, together with over half a dozen helpers, most of whom are church members. At Pandas, children enjoy structured mornings under the supervision of their mothers (mainly) with the staff on hand to help and chat. The children are given a light – normally fruit – snack, while the mothers often enjoy cake!

On Wednesday mornings from 10.00 to 12.00, throughout the year, there is “Take a Break” – with the church doors open to all for a cup of coffee or tea and a tea-cake, but more importantly, to provide a meeting place where everyone is welcome for a friendly chat. This is a much-valued facility, particularly for those on their own, to have a laugh and share in a warm and relaxed environment. ‘Take a Break’ is very welcoming to anyone new to Stock or just to TaB, as it is affectionately known.
